This is an eclectic one. The song styles are blended heterogeneously throughout
the track order. The only initial
strategic decision here was bookending the playlist with “Magic City” and
“Dreams Today”. These songs project a
certain kind of radiance for me, like watching a city waking up for the first
time. They often provide a backdrop for
my early morning runs through my new neighborhood in Clawson.
I wove a few songs together by
small commonalities. The scale in the
beginning of “So Far…” leads to the residual key left by “Song for my
Father”. A buzzy synthesizer threads “Fantastic
Man” and “Right Place, Wrong Time”. The
applause in “Tea for Two” and “Scarlet Begonias” oddly connects two different
imaginary audiences. Other songs were
situated based on contrast. “Misplaced
Devotion” shrinks down to “Jesus is the Only Answer”. “Trapdoor” is a great way to wake up from the
hazy dream of “I Talk to the Wind”.
There will probably be several
songs on here that will incite the idea of “why wasn’t this on a summer
2011/12/13 playlist”? I miss things and
I am slow to pick them up. What can I
say.
